Drowning in Top-of-Funnel Activity: Why More Isn't the Answer

The three things that decide whether a go-to-market strategy gains traction: visibility, credibility and access — Fred Sheffield, 5 Stones Growth Systems

Founders tell me they need more top-of-funnel activity. What they actually need is more visibility, more credibility, and better access.

As a startup, are you drowning in top of the funnel activities and think the answer is more? Founders tell me they need more "top of the funnel" actives all the time. What they actually need is more visibility, more credibility, and better access. Those three things determine whether your go-to-market strategy gains traction or fails.

Too many founders spend months chasing prospects before they've built the foundation that makes prospects want to engage in the first place.
Here's how I think about it:

Visibility

If the right people don't know you exist, nothing else matters.
That starts with a clear message around why your company exists, a brand that creates confidence, and a website that reinforces your value instead of simply describing your product.

It also means creating a formal referral program. Referrals shouldn't be something you hope for—they should be a repeatable growth system that consistently introduces you to the right people.

Credibility

Startups don't have years to build trust one prospect at a time.
The fastest way to accelerate credibility is through the right strategic partnerships. When respected organizations, advisors, customers, or industry experts stand beside you, you gain access to audiences and relationships that might otherwise take years to develop. Borrowing trust is one of the smartest growth strategies a startup can execute.

Access

Visibility and credibility only matter if they get you in front of the right people.
That requires discipline. You need a clear understanding of your market segments, your Ideal Customer Profiles, and the specific personas involved in the buying decision. Without that clarity, even great messaging and strong partnerships create activity instead of results.
One of the biggest lessons I've learned over the years is this:

Growth isn't created by filling the top of the funnel. It's created by building the systems that make the right opportunities naturally flow into it. This Thursday on Tell the Truth Thursday, I'll share why I believe founders should stop thinking about the traditional sales funnel from the top down and instead reverse engineer it to create more visibility, credibility, and access.

I think you'll find the approach different than what most go-to-market experts teach. What has had the biggest impact on your business: increasing visibility, building credibility, or creating better access?
